History: Legend has it that Dionysius, the god of wine, fell in love with a young woman named Amethystos, who wanted to remain chaste and pure. He went for help to Artemis, who turned the young woman into a pure white crystal. When Dionysus found out, he spilled his wine turning it into the purple crystal we know today. During the Middle Ages, the church took the amethyst as a symbol of renunciation of earthly goods, obedience to God and chastity, so it is common for cardinals and bishops to wear rings of this gemstone.
